What is Disk Defragmentation?--Feb 28, 2011--Posted by John Gullage

What is disk defragmentation?
Disk defragmentation is the rearrangements of the fragmentations and clutter files that are generated during the long-time usage of the computer with professional tool to release more disk space. Therefore, the computer overall performance will be improved greatly. When the physical memory that the application needs is not sufficient, the operating system produces temporary swap file in the hard disk, the hard disk space that the application needs will become virtual memory. The virtual memory manager will frequently read and write from hard disk, which is the main cause that leads to a large amount of disk fragmentations. Disk defragmentation is rewriting the existed files on the hard disk to make the files arranged continuously. More hard disk space will be spared.

Why you need to defrag disk?
As the increase of the files saved in the hard disk, more and more space is taken up. Disk fragmentations are produced constantly. During the daily use of our computer, Windows is always creating, deleting, and updating files on the disk. Over time, large amount of data debris is accumulated on the hard disk. Windows knows the location of each file and operates them accurately, but it can not automatically organize these files in order to keep the computer in its best performance. If these fragmentations are not defragged regularly, your computer overall performance will be affected a lot. The disk space can not be used to its full advantage. The operating system runs more slowly due to the fact that the computer hard disk can not run as fast as before. Meanwhile many other problems will be caused, such as computer freezes, blue screen, system crashing, and so on. Therefore, it is necessary and important to defrag the disk.
